Radiation therapists are invited to help set the evidence priorities for upright radiotherapy.
The ESTRO RTT Committee is organising the fourth edition of its RTT Workshop Series, and one of the three workshops is dedicated to upright radiotherapy: Workshop 3 – Upright Radiotherapy: Evidence, Priorities, and the Road to Clinical Adoption.
Interest in treating patients in a sitting, semi-sitting or standing position on a rotating upright patient positioning system has grown quickly, and commercial systems are now reaching the clinic. The evidence base supporting clinical implementation, however, is still thin. Radiation therapists (RTTs) are central to making upright treatment work in practice, yet the questions that matter most to RTT practice have never been prioritised systematically from an international RTT perspective.
This workshop sets out to change that. Using a modified nominal group technique, participants will contribute equally to identifying and ranking the evidence gaps, implementation challenges and knowledge needs that stand between upright radiotherapy and safe, feasible, sustainable clinical practice.
How the workshop runs
- Two virtual workshops, separated by an individual priority-ranking survey so that each participant’s ranking is independent of group dynamics
- A first session to surface evidence gaps and implementation challenges from participants’ own clinical experience
- A second session for discussion, consensus-building and refinement of the final priority framework
- A community validation session at the ESTRO 2027 Congress, testing whether the priorities resonate across the wider international RTT community
